Auto insurance companies are mulling over how to curb distracted driving, as the debate on tackling the issue intensifies. Lawmakers are struggling to enforce handheld talking and texting bans throughout the U.S., and the public seems reluctant to change their habits until it affects their pocketbook. So far, higher ticket fines, such as in New York and Connecticut, along with increased police presence and public educational campaigns, have the most positive effect on drivers putting down their phones. But with one in every eleven traffic deaths in the U.S. still caused by distracted driving, many are offering suggestions on on how to tackle the problem through other avenues, such as through insurance companies. "Car-insurance companies could simply add a clause to deny coverage to customers if an accident occurs while the driver is using a cell phone," Bill LeBlanc, a WSJ reader from Boulder, Co. suggested, further stating that "paying all damages out of pocket... would put a fairly swift end to this practice for most people."
