Moving valuable items

When you plan to move items that are particularly valuable to you, they will need special protections, both physical protections and financial. Some items that are considered as valuables include artwork and antiques; collectibles; fine tableware; stock certificates and currency; furs; oriental rugs; jewelry and electronics.

Document all the valuables you will be shipping with your moving company. If you’re talking currency, maybe it would be safer to take it with you rather than to have it hauled. The same can be said for smaller breakables. But sometimes you just won’t have room for everything in your own car or truck.

Take pictures or videos of any valuables, to note their condition before the move. Write up a detailed description of all valuable items, and include the serial numbers if the items have one. Make two copies of this descriptive list, one for you and one for the Movers.

Secure a High Value Inventory form from your mover and complete it, including all pertinent information. Establish the value of expensive items. For computers and other electronics, a receipt from the store where you purchased them is the best proof of their value. Your insurance company can appraise the items if you no longer have the receipts.

For jewelry, silverware, furs, china, collectibles, artwork and antiques, get a professional appraiser to determine values, and get that in writing. Make copies of the receipts and appraisals.

If you’ll be moving any valuable items yourself, see if your homeowners insurance will cover their value while they are in transit. If they don’t, then add a rider to your policy for the move.

If a moving company will be moving your valuable items, get full protection, which means the full value of each piece is assured, in case they are damaged. If you don’t get this coverage, the moving company will only need to pay you the released value protection, or 60 cents a pound.

Don’t pack your valuables yourself if they are going on the mover’s truck. They won’t cover damage to anything they did not pack themselves. You can also hire a company that strictly packs and moves valuables, but this will cost more. Take smaller items with you in your own vehicle..
